Desenzano – Erudite

After recording Eszter Vida, drummer and producer, Evan, asked if I could bring my 4-track around to an unnamed studio to record a tune. Evan is recording all your favourite Leeds bands at the moment - Imaginary Husband, Elwell, Normal Village, Rhiannon Hope - the list is endless. He has a penchant for the 80s, funky basslines and danceable rhythms, underlined in his project ‘Desenzano’, the name of a lakeside province in northern Italy - you can almost feel the summertime heat.

Evan is precise, programming the songs entire drums from scratch. Despite its electronic sound, he wanted everything played live - the spirit of DIY. There are so many layers on this thing, expertly crafted, so many sounds to explore and hone in on. The bassline is the star of the show for me; funky beyond belief. Then it's the layer upon layer of keys, all different synths, each one carefully tried and tested before being applied to tape. A labour of love.

When you record people, sometimes you need to direct, take charge and give people the confidence to commit. But other times, like when recording with Evan, you just need to take a step back and watch him work. Sometimes you're the driver, sometimes you're the car and what a fun and rewarding journey.

A bonus to this, the corner shop behind this unnamed studio is one of the rare stores to still be selling the best crisps ever - Bobby’s BBQ Sauce Snax. Real ones know.
