Covent - Lay Low

Today we moved into our new house, me and El! I migrated all the way from Bramley to Kirkstall (I may experiment with your music, but geographically, why fix what's only a little broken?) So after we got our keys, jumped up and down in the kitchen shouting yippee, I set off to my old home, Eiger, to record Covent, a band whose huge sound doesn’t seem to be contained by the limitations of the studio, so let's see how they do on tape. Despite my poor timekeeping, I do like to get to the studio early to set up so I don’t get too caught up in gabbing, but today I get caught by an equally chatty and lovely band. Typical.

So we start on Oliver’s drums. And whilst we start on drums, it would be rude not to include Liam on Bass when there's a perfectly good input on the 4-track. I sometimes feel lazy doing drums and Bass at the same time, but it makes perfect sense really. They are playing off each other, so it obviously feels more natural. We Glyn Jonnsed the drums with a little mic on the bass drum too. Recently I've been leaning towards the present bass drums, whereas before it was all about that boom. I think that rim hit is so perfectly set back and to compare it to the snare hit, I think when Oliver really digs in, it sounds sublime too. That's the beauty of the diversity of sound afforded by that guy who just LOVED to record the Beatles.

Oliver was following David’s guitar the whole time for a guide, but with the headphones on and a chugging chorus infused Bass, Liam made sure he was heard (which is tricky to do when you're playing straight into the Tascam). Love a bass tone like that, you don’t even need a guitar when there's so much definition in the high end. Nevertheless, we did decide to record guitar, as David has lugged it all the way here. What a sound. Sounds like a whole universe, even through the compression of the 4-track. Some more chorus to add to the pool and that delay feedback that jeers throughout really does create such a dangerous counterpoint to the waves of reverb.

A dreamier version than the one on their debut ‘Under the Changed Sun’ - it reminded me of JAWS, a band I loved in my teen years - the best of an indie bunch I reckon. They had a tune on Rocksmith - they were class. Nothing makes me think of them more than David’s Vocals. We took advantage of both mics, the AT2020 and the BM88. We put them side by side. David wants a bit of grit? Sings into the BM88. A bit of clarity? The AT2020. If he’s feeling greedy? Somewhere in the middle. We even chucked a bit of chorus on the vocals too - these guys can’t get enough of the stuff.

So that was that! A big expansive song, a real experience to listen to and I think it hits the tape so nicely. I can’t lie, I spent a good amount of time excited to get home and hang out in my new gaff, but in the meantime it's always fun to record a band who love the sonics of sound and are sound lads themselves. I even found out Liam is the manager of a retro games shop I used to pass every time I was in York to see El. Small world! He even hooked me up with an Xbox 360. Nothing but Skate 3 and Fifa 13 for a while now.
