Clive – Cuntry

Now for Clive! Not one of the band members is called Clive, which didn't shock me much to be honest. A really exciting alternative band on the scene at the moment, with members Josh and Tom also being in The Great Unwashed and Josh being in Manchester’s Holly Head. The demos they sent me were so impressive, just another highlight of how good the Leeds Music Scene is at the moment.

We all squeezed into the Clive Living room, mainly filled by the drums and its onlooking sofas, accompanied exclusively by my recording gear on one and Josh and Tom on the other. I always feel bad when a drummer has already set up drums with condenser mics and I have to inform them I don't have phantom power, but Aaron was a good sport about it. We made them sound great anyway, with the newly implemented 3 mic setup, so crisp and expert drumming by Aaron.

Then came Sib’s bass, softened with the Cathedral Reverb, as I do most sessions these days. Then came Tom’s guitar, who I'd met by chance at the Wisecrack gig late last year - no surprises we were talking about Guided by Voices. I can see why Tom and Josh are in multiple bands together, their guitar playing compliment each other so well, so in tune with each other, I should send out a version that's just the guitars, honestly - but it would still pale in insignificance compared the the full band of Clive, it’s just that good.

Conservatively spread over all this, is the occasional vocal of Sib, the low melodic rambles reminds me of a consciousness we are all familiar with and through a karaoke mic no less. Before we pack everything away, we have a little easter egg of noise with the DL4 delay and a few other pedals on my board. Always fun to experiment and even more fun to watch talented bands take to tape like they were born with nothing else to record onto.
