Eszter Vida - Roadkill
I get the inkling that people enjoy Contact Buzz. I pretty consistently get really positive feedback, but what I don’t get a lot of is people booking in a second session. I don’t take offense to it, everyone’s dead busy, maybe one Contact Buzz is more than enough. Clearly Eszter doesn’t think so. It’s my third time working with her and when artists like Eszter keep coming back to work with me, I know I'm doing something right. She just released the studio single for this tune, ‘Roadkill’. As always, Evan Martin has done a great job with the track - the space around the drums is masterful, so make sure you listen to that straight after this to hear how it SHOULD sound.
I walk back into the Beast House - compliment Callum on his Homers and head upstairs. Books stacked up, gig posters wallpaper the walls and the suns coming through, raying up the 4-track. You love to see it. So the goal with this one is to get a more intimate and stripped back version of Roadkill, like when Eszter and Lola first wrote it. So we start with Lola’s acoustic guitar - throw a bit of reverb, chorus and delay. It's super simple but I just think that's become the Contact Buzz sound. I’ll mix it up one day, but don’t fix what's vibing hard, you know?
Next I hand the telephone mic to Eszter for her to put a leg warmer on it, for optimal pop filtering and away she goes. She’s not one for second takes, she doesn’t need them when it comes to vocals. I think the character in her vocals is just so suited to the telephone mic, Rich with an occasional breath (i’m working on describing vocals, it’s tricky). Eszter Vida songs always have this melancholy and self depreciation that again, feels like it should be a confession over a telephone.
We did a few extra bits, the swelling solo, if I didn't record it, I think I'd be confused as to what instrument it is - absolutely love it. And some backing harmonies - there was debate whether we should keep them and we recorded a lot more, but I think just after the solo, in the crescendo, it works so well. We didn’t aim for a massive sound, but I think Eszter’s natural songwriting ability is what makes it feel massive, it just helps when you’ve got some sweet harmonies on there too. Another banger from Eszter. Are we surprised?
