Cab Driver - For a While
Next up is a new band that has been turning heads and rightfully so. Cab Driver are an Indie band with three members on a production course, so you can imagine me, I had to sound like I knew what I was doing. Luckily I had drummer Matt, a fellow Music business student to make me feel at home.
It was the old stomping ground, Leeds Conservatoire, that we set up the session, after I’d stupidly left my car in the John Lewis car park (Lets just say, most of my fee went on that decision). I’ve been trying to get the reverb sorted before it even gets committed to tape and Charlie’s bass is a great example of this, so smooth.
The acoustic guitar was a real revelation too - ‘The Replacements - Unsatisfied’ is one of my favourite guitar sounds of all time. We didn’t have a 12 string, but we could double track the guitar - one time over the hole and one time over the 12th fret, one time with reverb and another with chorus. My favourite guitar tone to date.
Brilliant guitar solo from Ollie, but can’t help but think of Champaign Supernova in the intro and outro haha, sorry boys! Vocally though? What a singer Ben is, really breathy, really clean, but didn’t stop him from having an edge when it came to the impact points.
We tried our hand at some vocal harmonies, had to remove some members and do a few takes, but to be fair, it ended up sounding nice and it's so hard to sing a note that nobody else is singing. Me and George have no idea what notes were singing for Mince, that's why it works.
I really love this tune and im glad when it came to mixing it i didnt feel like i needed to do much in post, it's just naturally massive from their performances. If you can make a track sound massive on a 4-track recording, you can only imagine how huge it sounds at a gig. You might have to go see them.
