Until Joy – Breathe

Finally, we get to record a Monomyth Band (That’s signed to the label at the point of recording (I didn’t forget about you Hitlist)). I first saw Until Joy years ago at Vinyl Whistle for a little Monomyth event. My first thought was ‘desert rock’, ‘Josh Homme influences’, I was captivated. I get that feeling a little less now, but that's only because they’ve matured and moved into a truer version of themselves.

I got to know Joel through the Songwriting module in 2nd year and bumped into him at every Monomyth (The label my band are on) event - one of the warmest guys I know, always a hug greeting from that dude. So when I knocked on the door to Lydia’s house, it was no different.

This time, as well as pulling out the Camcorder, I showed off the little camera my parents got me for christmas (I kept forgetting to bring it and unfortunately I only remembered to take a couple of pics at the end). Drum kit in the kitchen: just a kick, snare, hi-hat and ride - I love it. Lights off the entire time; chucked an orange mood light in for a bit of pizazz.

The drums, bass and Guitar sound great, but the theatrics of Joel and Lydia’s voices are what shine here. I had no idea of Joel's love of musical theatre, but now it all makes sense. I told him to just have fun with it, and that he did. Rock opera meets lofi kitchen recording!
