Seeker - Renegade

Today I have Seeker! Or at least their singer Jude. Singer Songwriter demos are a little lacking on this project, so what better way to start the correction than a lad from Wakefield - two underrepresented demographics on my channel. I parked the car outside Eiger to be greeted by a lad resembling a young Lou Reed. Telling people who I think they look like used to be a bit of an ice breaker for me, but it's gotten him in hot water once or twice, so I don’t bother anymore. I was really good at it too, even if nobody else saw my point of view.

It’s strange completely ignoring the drums in the corner, but once the chit chat ended, the acoustic guitar commenced. You know what happens next, we double track that thing. A gorgeous Epiphone Hummingbird - I wanted one a while back, but for some reason I sound like arse on acoustic. Bit of delay, bit of chorus, panned then both to each side - the kind of freedom you get when you’re only using four tracks. Sounds proper wholesome I think. I found out that our Billy from the North also used to be in Jude’s band on bass! Further proof it's a small, small world up in Leeds.

We considered the landline mic, we really did landline mic fans, but sometimes you just want a few more frequencies hitting the tape. So here’s Jude, belting it out. Very britpop, very dovetail parka and tambourine - some real soul to his voice. I always think the tape makes voices like that sound really earnest. I mention the Oasis demo, ‘Alive’ a little when asked about favourite demos. I’m no huge Oasis stan, you won’t catch me paying through the nose to see their reunion, but there is something special about hearing Liam’s voice on tape, before all the fame, the egos. Always picture all the hope they must have had in those moments - looking up at the stars.

Back to Jude! We booted up the Roland VA Keyboard and were amazed to find that hitting two notes would automatically start a song, depending on the cadence. We had way too much fun and then frustration with that, found a lovely tone and then figured out how we could make the track sound a little more homely. There’s touches of Stereophonic’s version of ‘Handbags and Gladrags’ - just little trills to add a little more colour, makes the world of difference. I think we came out with a salt of the earth recording here, which I think should always be the aim for these kinds of recordings. Really chuffed with how it transports you and surrounds you a little. Just let it happen, man.
