Eszter Vida – Paper Rounds

Now for a tune I’ve been raving about since we recorded it - one by none other than Eszter Vida. I remember hearing ‘Is this my last night with you?’ and being in awe with the expansive 80s inspired sound. Drummer Evan is also the guy to go to in Leeds for recording at the moment, so it's no surprise a project he is involved with has such an all encompassing sound.

First on the mics were drums and what a sound we dialed in, just listen to that snare. That's the difference between someone who just sits down at the drums and plays and someone who considers everything beforehand. My second time recording Lola on bass and first time recording onto the 6th channel of my 4-track with James’ two keyboard set up (I learned a lot about my gear in this session, being pushed on by Evan).

This is also happening in conjunction with the Leeds - Aston Villa game Ben had on his phone. Luckily Evan was my right hand man and as he was checking the mixes, I could be let down by another lacklustre performance from Leeds (At least we’re doing better now).

Already we had a really full sounding track bussed onto channel 4, but with the addition of Eszter’s guitar and Ben’s Lead, we had a symphony of sound. To top it off, we had one of the best one take vocal performances I’ve recorded from Eszter - just brilliant to watch and I’m so glad the compression was dialed in well because I was still learning how to use it.

We were left with my favourite track to date, one that I show anyone I’m wanting to impress. Yes, it is still lo-fi and it has that touch of vaporwave to it somehow, but I really think this song bridges the gap between lo-fi and hi-fi, anyone could enjoy this performance because of how full and well balanced it sounds. Again, thank you to Evan for helping out with this one, it wouldn’t sound half as good without him.
