Twinsize - Peanuts

Next up is another Monomyth band. Over the years of being on the label I’ve seen some fantastic bands come and go. These guys are among my favourites, what a large sound they get. Like a lot of bands I work with, the band's majority are production students - my worst nightmare… only joking. I got to give Emily and Presley a glimpse of what a Contact Buzz session looks like at their house when recording Until Joy. We’d already booked in by then so they had no choice but to go on with the recording.

My second recording at Beckett, they really do have some impressive facilities, it might even put the conservatoire to shame, but as a business student, it's rare I ever got to see anything other than the business suite and the odd practice room. Really expensive mic stands that looked like they could have been ripped off Optimus Prime's torso hung over Ben’s drum kit - would be rude not to use them!

So much floor space too, once we combined those punchy drums with Sasha’s booming bass, we went about a western stand off between the guitarists, Presley and Milo. One stood on one side of the room with their Vox AC15 and the other with a Fender Champion (I think, I can't really remember). We recorded both at the same time, just filled the room with fine fine noises, like so fine - had to wear ear protection but it was lush. Recording both amps at the same time facing each other, panning the guitar gave this wider effect on the recording, i love it.

This being a new song, structures were changed, unexpectedly so for Emily, who after her triumphant first take on vocals shouted at Presley for confusing her and forcing her to remove lyrics from the take. The rest of the band claimed Emily would get it in one before her arrival and despite being thrown off by the omissions, she nailed it. She's got a cracking voice, it must be said.

To finish up we brushed up on a mistake of mine, leaving the click in over the bass when bussing down and recorded some footage in the dark, as we hypothesised over at the beginning of the session. I love recording bands who go for a big sound, despite the 4-track completely going against their nature, they always embrace the limitations and a massive sound is in the songwriting and dynamics, not in the production in my opinion. Really love this track.
