Mother Said - Headstart

Contact Buzz has gotten to a certain point now where I can ask bands I've loved for ages to come down and do a session and they’re likely to say yes. I’m incredibly lucky to get Mother Said down on Mothering Sunday, no less (Sorry Mum, I’m busy). Mother Said have been going for about as long as my band Mince and have become a bit of a stalwart in the scene, despite last year's hiatus. Well they’re back with a bang, with a phenomenal lo-fi tape courtesy of the brilliant ‘Shooting Tzars’.

So it’s back to Mabgate. Loving that space. Reunited with Josh, who is also in 1000 Degree Knife. He knew the drill, got the mics set up for drums, discussed the structure a bit and got cracking. Only a few changes from the 1000 Degree set up, drum wise - still a good amount of reverb but this time that spaghetti western spring reverb. Still the three mic: snare, overhead and Room set up. He hits the drums hard, like a gun shot - love that kind of drummer. Hits it like it owes him money (He’s way too lovely for that analogy, sorry mate!).

Rounding out Track 4’s bus content, we have Ewan on bass, with some lovely playful lines. I'm a sucker for octaves and the gallop that comes packaged so nicely with those hi hat hits. If i wasn’t a cowboy then, im walking through the saloon doors right about now. Marcus is the Jimi Hendrix of the Leeds scene. Half because of his aggressive and gobsmacking playing, but also because he plays a right handed guitar inverted. Like his holding it left handed and the low E string is closest to the floor. That's what dreams are made of; a proper unique style is born out of that too. Has no problem with catching an extra string or two, reminds me of Andy Gill.

And like most producers opt to do, vocals come last, but why would we use two mics for two singers, just use one and have Katie and Amber fight for sonic space through the AT2020. Every part of this band is unique and captivating, but it is the chemistry of the two singers that really sell Mother Said. Great storytellers, great performers - genuinely like two sisters. They may be sisters, I never asked to be fair. All round masterclass in performance arts and engaging storytelling. I recorded their gig at Wharf Chambers the week before and every ounce of stagecraft is brought into the fold of everything they do - luckily for my recording and your ears. A real treat, hopefully they’ll be playing a lot more gigs around Leeds because there aren’t many better at captivating an audience. Listen to what your Mother Said, people!
