Troutflies is a project I've been wanting to get involved in a Buzz session since I met Reuben at the Golden Ball in York. An atmospheric and brooding performance that night was the start of messaging backwards and forwards before my mate Alex got him to come down to Leeds to play a gig. Everyone loved them, with Tom from Bull and Rowan from Rowan and friends rounding off the York trio that night, you had a true spectacle the Wisecrack crowd were so tuned into.

Sundays are a rare day Reuben gets a day to himself and I was so pleased he decided to come record a song (or two) with me. We bundled into the Normal Village basement, at the request of Alex, who was too busy making noise in France to a few thousand people. I’ve never brought so many random instruments to a recording, but it felt right on this occasion to bring my parents allotment buggy to carry a kids violin, glockenspiel, melodica and much more.

Despite it just being Reuben on the day, he ensured the sound was full. Multiple guitars, a cacophony of percussion and pitched instruments, shifting from section to section. Haunting, alerting and occasional madness over these two seamless tracks. When recording, you can see how precise he is - despite the experimental nature, every note, every choice made is thoroughly planned and felt. So hard to pin down, but always such an enjoyable experience to listen to his music. To top it all off, an absolute delight of a human being.

It is my hope that this isn't the last you hear of Troutflies on this channel.
