April Tapes - Your Friends

Driving through Forgemasters is an inspiring way to get into Sheffield. If there were 7 wonders of Yorkshire, surely that would be one of them. A slice of the old world, before berners- Lee came and ruined small town living (and Thatcher ruined everything else). There are many reasons to visit Sheffield, but today’s reason was to get something bits and bobs sorted for the new season of Contact Buzz with Max. Max is the social media guy for Contact Buzz, but also the frontman of April Tapes, a favourite of the Sheffield Indie scene. I rocked up in the morning, had their last tea bag (despite not liking tea - sorry guys) and we cracked on with some boring admin things.

Bethan joined us in the living room, but had to get some sleep for her night shift, so we thought we’d take a break to do a quick recording (the quickest to date, in fact). Initially I thought we could do a landline cover, but hearing the two harmonise whilst warming up, I needed to capture that. These sessions are like Pokemon to me at the moment, I need to catch all these class bands when the opportunity arises. I put a telephone mic infront of Bethan and one infront of max. I’m immediately getting Bug Club vibes, but I just need a little more definition from the guitar, so up steps the At2020.

I didn’t even attach my board, I’ve been loving really dry signals recently, especially when you’ve got such a compelling vocal line anyway. One take, a live take of the whole recording, done in one fell swoop. Really love how much life is in this recording - that's what harmonies do for me; the amount of character a vocal has? Square it when you add on another voice with its own soaring and diving. What better way to celebrate than chowing down on a Beres pork sandwich. Just don’t forget to tell them you want everything on it or they’ll know you’re from Leeds.
