Welcome back everyone, to an all new season. A few things to look forward to… All new tape releases, more regular content of all kinds and a whole new look. We thought to ourselves, how do we come back with a bang? Well by releasing our favourite new lofi bands second demo with us. That's right, it's Postcard. This was recorded on that same boiling day, actually before Bardez. We thought we could bash a tune out before Bethan rocked up and that we did. We descended into the basement for the first time and started setting up for a recording first. Drums and bass simultaneously.

Now all my producer friends will probably be familiar with the Reverb video where they recreate the Amy Winehouse - Rehab drum sound. One mic in the middle of the kit. That’s it. The aim for this tune was pure lofi, so I know I had the people around me to encourage my dubious act. Because it was one drum mic and the bass was hooked straight up to the 4-track, we could do both simultaneously down to one channel. We were speed running. Dom and Rohan of Coal Mob locked in like they have been for years, although seeing them on vastly different instruments was a sight to behold.

It’s not a short tune but they nailed it. Drums sound great. Positioning of the mic is pretty important but I think we got a good signal of all the different components, with a nice amount of crunch too. Not even an hour in and we were onto Sam’s guitar. Managed to get a proper GBV tone for this one out of my old amp I sold to Rohan. Then it was the man himself to get back to more familiar territory. What a lead line that is, I love that both tracks we’ve done together are so adjacent to my two favourite bands. This one is so GBV, whilst Bardez was so Pavement. Really feel lucky they came to me with this project.

Then it was Sam’s first time ever properly recording his vocals. Sock on mic, lyrics in hand, slight wobble in the voice. Love the raw talent that comes across with recordings like this. Confidence isn’t quite there yet in the singing, which is perfect for lofi music. It’s supposed to represent us - the nervous and unsure. Rockstars are dead and maybe shouldn’t have existed in the first place. Nerves + DL4 delay = pure sonic ecstasy.

And just like that, the first Postcard tune was committed to tape. We went to Sainsburys to take a break and get some magnum lollies. Waited for Bethan and cracked on with the next tune you know so well. Really love everything about this project, the fact it’s got a few familiar faces, but the new faces add so much variation to what I knew their old projects to be.
