Ponzo – Eyes Eating

Ponzo are a group that a lot of people are talking about right now. One of those bands that are so different you have to see live, be it the wide mix of genres they cover unapologetically or the dynamic and occasionally theatric range of performance they exude. A group I've been chasing for a session for a while, we finally organised a date and descended into Billy’s Basement.

Wondering which direction the recording would go in, Billy laid down a dub beat reminiscent of the Specials to my untrained ear. We felt the snare was such an important part of the song we would close mic it with a third mic, meaning the overhead and room mic would buss straight together - a technique I wanted to try since the Eszter Vida session. I mean how crunchy does that snare sound?

Once we bussed over the complete drums, we Sofia’s bass down next, but not before I would record bass over the drums, like a fool. I recovered it, but the seemingly strategically placed stop in the drums was a mistake by me. Then comes Jack’s guitar, which changes up the style once again - always odd, always so entrancing.

Then the thing that tops it off so well. Sofia’s vocals - moments of Bjork, moments of Kate Bush, but so uniquely their own. Upon Billy’s request, we ran Sofia’s vocals through my Cathedral and DL4 delay to really enforce the elements of dub. Overall, such an enjoyable tune, I knew lofi would work so well for them, i mean listen to those drums at the end, the big distorted toms - so good.
