This session comes with a disclaimer… go get your ears cleaned before you can’t hear out of one of them. Especially if you record and mix music. Floco is a session I’ve been telling people about when they’ve asked ‘have you got anything exciting coming up?’. And what do I do 2 days before? Go shove a Q-tip in my ear, then some olive oil drops to expand the bugger. But we soldier on and rely more heavily on the artist to ok the mixes at every stage. That artist in this case is Flo, who was back at her old house after moving away recently. With the help of Josh And Brandon, who themselves are bound for Manchester, we make their parting home the setting for this song.

‘For Fudge’ is Flo’s homage to her late dog. We wanted it to feel vulnerable and intimate, but also sprawling as the song moved into different sections, so lots more layers than I usually do was necessary. We used a tape I named ‘Birdsounds’ for the sample that must have been taped back in the 90s on this tape I got from ebay - a tranquil way to start a song so close to the heart. We got percussion out of the way, right at the end of the song, just a little kick and snare, courtesy of a Casio.

Then we started building the structure of the song with the nylon guitar. So light, like a low tuned ukulele, a nylon always sounds like they're meant to be played in a bedroom to me. To accentuate the choruses and more picky moments, we introduced the electric guitar. It's quite low in the mix, really is easily missed but just gives the guitar more volume.

So they were the sounds we wanted in the centre, we got to work on the left hand side with a low frequency and a high frequency element. I brought my cheap Hofner bass for that smooth bedroom quality we’d been nailing so far. Then we recorded that gorgeous violin part. I put some effects on it, Josh Brought a lovely expensive mic down so we could REALLY hear that violin - I get why people spend upward of £50 on gear, it's just not my thing (That’s me being facetious for comic effect, i’ve spent plenty, believe me). I love the first post chorus, where that violin comes in, with the voices mimicking it, like it opens up for the first time in the song, hinting at what is to come.

Here I am talking prematurely about the vocals, well lets get straight into it. We recorded the main vocals first and decided to go pretty dry with it, all things considering. A little drive and the smallest amount of delay. At the same time, Josh punched in the processed samples of Fudge growling and groaning, trying to reach the chocolate egg on top of Floco’s piano. He truly is in this song with Flo. She really whispered into that mic, like she was talking to herself, us in the room interrupting the peace by putting a camera in her face.

Finishing touches were some wetter vocals from Floco and Josh, a few harmonies and then a lovely pasta tea Flo made for us. A session that completely lived up to my expectations and then some. Lo-fi and hushed but massive sounding when it needed it. I love the little artifacts that got left in, like a real lost song, for a story that's as old as time - our love for our fluffy companions.
