The Rayne - Sailing

Here’s a little extra for you Bryan fans out there - a top notch dreamy Yacht Rock classic. This is part 2 of last season’s session, where we recorded ‘In Your Room’. Bryan came to me with the aim of rounding our recording count to 4, so he could put out a few physical releases. As I write this, I think it's going to be something for the future, but I'll be sure to update you when it's available to pick up. Huge love to Bryan, my girlfriend's dad, but more than that a great performer and talented musician who has shown me support from the very first time I even mentioned this project - do go check The Rayne out if you get the chance to.

So anyway, we finished recording in your room (no not YOUR room, we couldn’t get in!) took a stroll down to House of Koko, one of Bryan’s favourite coffee spots and headed back up to crank out another hit. Like most Rayne sessions, it started on guitar. But listen to that picked guitar. Right? The chorus, the reverb, its pure soft rock perfection. And that was right off the bat - just like a dream. In no time at all, it was back to the piano - telephone mic stuffed in the back. Some of those early chords just feel like the seventies, you picture them with this fuzzy washed out colour. It turns out telephone mics just go so well on piano. Who’d have thought it?

Then we do a telephone vocal take, because at this point I was still going to put it out as a landline cover, but come on, this needed the demo treatment (The demo treatment doesn’t sound as good as it actually is). Bryan’s voice is perfect for this genre, gritty but so tuneful, we’ve already spoken about his strict warmups. Then a proper dynamic harmony on a more defined mic. Really enjoyed the lower harmonies he did on that one, then the big jumps in the chorus - just a showcase of Bryan’s taste and talent. That one snap after the first chorus is me - I was dead sure the verse was coming back in, but let us leave it in as a reminder not to get too over zealous. But even that click couldn’t ruin this stunning cover.

For Fans of: Supertramp, Paul McCartney and The Kinks.
