ShotbunGullet – Shattered

Directly a month after my session with TONII, I’m back in the Monomyth room with Lucas once more, with a similar set up. The one major difference is he walks in with Kelan from Ludvik Langholm this time. Another big difference is the style of electronic music, but I’ll get into that.

On the final day of three recordings in a row, I’m starting to feel a little fatigued, but I’m revitalised by ShotbunGullet’s self subscribed ‘half locked in, half goofing off’ approach. The first half of the day was recording Lucas, getting the bulk of the samples and breakbeats down. It might not be the spontaneity of a band recording, but make no mistake, the performance element is very much alive whilst punching in these moments.

A song of two sections. The first being Midwest emo and the second being full chaos jungle with other electronic elements I don’t pretend to be well versed in - all I know is I love it. Lucas picks up his gorgeous Yamaha bass and plays in complete contrast to what I just heard from him on channel 1. Then more in keeping with what I was expecting, 808 samples to turn the low end into a bouncy castle.

Did I say it might not be a band recording? Keelan pulling out his PRS may have contradicted that notion. Lovely little riff. We spent a little time making sure both tones were right, I think we got it spot on. I’m a sucker for a harmonic or two. A little freakout section at the end? Freakout Breakbeat - name something cooler? I’m not sure you can.

Then came the vocals. There weren't many lyrics on this one, but the intonation was spot on - very emo, reminded me a bit of the first foals album. Through the telephone mic too, so dramatic! A singular ‘GULLET’ punctuates the song - a shout that went through every crazy effect their little box would allow.

Some of my favourite samples I think I could pick out (in no particular order). 1. The Minikit Lego noise. 2. The noise Bowser makes when he kills you. 3. That ‘Avatar: Last Air Bender’ sample goes unbelievably hard, the definition of angst. What a fun song. I need to see these guys live.
